The smartphone camera world looks set to become very exciting later this month. Previous leaks have hinted strongly that Chinese manufacturer, Huawei, could be about to launch a smartphone with a class-leading triple-camera.

Now leaks on Weibo, combined with less-than-subtle hints coming directly from the manufacturer itself, all-but confirm the March 27th launch of the triple-lensed P20 as Huawei’s forthcoming flagship handset.

At the end of February, Huawei started posting a series of teaser videos on Instagram, promoting the P20 with the not-so-subtle tagline “See mooore with AI”, hinting strongly at a triple-camera setup backed up with onboard AI processing. The videos all feature a design made up of three tell-tale circles, echoing the alternative spelling ‘mooore’ in the tagline.

If these teasers weren’t confirmation enough, a new leak on Weibo, unearthed by Telefoon Abonnement, provides official-looking images of the front and rear of the P20, showing a Leica-branded triple-lens camera setup on the rear and an iPhone X-style camera notch on the front. The rear camera setup appears to consist of a dual-camera module with a third single-lens module installed alongside it, next to twin flash components.

A triple-camera setup, like a triple-blade razor, may at first appear gimmicky but offers tangible benefits when it comes to light-capturing capabilities and zoom options.

More recent teasers on Instagram indicate how Huawei hopes to challenge the capabilities of DSLR cameras, with one in particular depicting of a pair of DSLR lenses, one of which appears to be telephoto and the other ultra-wide-angle.

Taking to Twitter, Huawei states ‘We’ve gone the extra distance so you can take the shortcut. All the lenses you need, in one.’

If Huawei can pull this off, we should expect to see the P20 near the top of DxOMark’s mobile charts soon, as the tests lean heavily towards cameras able to mimic the zoom and portrait capabilities of DSLRs.

According to serial leaker Evan Blass, the P20 will come in three variants: the P20, P20 Lite and P20 Pro, with the Pro version being the only model to feature the new triple-camera.
